A vision for a universal movement practice began with Joseph Pilates.  As the method of Pilates, increasingly gains popularity over the last decade, one could say that his wish has eventuallycome true.

Joseph Pilates had a rich background in physical training, including gymnastics and bodybuilding. In pursuit of a healthy, pain-free life—and inspired by his own struggles with musculoskeletal and other health issues, particularly during childhood—he sought to understand how the body could move more efficiently and with greater awareness.

By combining his personal experience, extensive knowledge, and clear vision for movement, he developed a method he originally called Contrology, now known as the Pilates method. He continued to practice, refine, and teach this system with dedication and excellence until the end of his life.

The Pilates method:

Pilates is a low impact excercice that aims in strengthening the body and mind  through control, precision, awareness and breathing.

You may do excercises using your bodyweight_where gravity becomes both your challenge and your support.  Or using the well designed equipment _that can offer both for assistance and resistance.

The miracle of this method is the great adaptapility to each one of the participants individualy.

Created both to rehabilitate injured people, as well as challenging the most experienced dancer or athlete. Whatever your level, background, or specific needs, our Pilates classes offer a welcoming space for you.

The 6 Pillars of the Pilates Method

Breathing – Coordinated, mindful breathing to support movement and enhance focus

Concentration – Full mental attention to each movement for maximum effectiveness

Control – Performing movements with intention rather than momentum

Precision – Attention to detail and correct alignment in every exercise

Centering – Initiating movement from the core, traditionally mentioned as the

“powerhouse”

Flow – Creating smooth, continuous, and efficient movement patterns

Our Moving Flow approach

Additionally to the main principles mentioned above in Therapiehuis we highly value personal attention &  progression. Moving flow incorporates modern approaches combined with the traditional elements. Kinetical stimuli and surprise are also important for training purposes, but by no means do we sacrifice safety over cheap impressions. We challenge each one of our participants to their current level. We learn how to listen to our bodies and needs. Both in a strong day and a day that our body is whisperig for retreat. If you keep on moving and showing up, be sure that you will experience strenght, confidence & comfort  into your own skin.

Common questions and misconceptions: To get a better idea of how the method works  (FAQ for pilates)

  • I have never trained before. I am not strong enough or flexible.

Perfect! starting with pilates is a great foundation for your physical condition. Establising strenght and body awareness can be the best option for a beginner  (especially before continuing with weightlifting or endurance). Getting to know your physical abilities with control provides  a great depth of body understading and prevents from future injuries.

  • Stiffness/ flexibility/ mobility.

Stiffness or flexibility can be birth given to our bodies. Or acquired after injuries/tramatic ecxperiences, repetive actions that lead to certain posture/syndromes (esp stiffness). Practicing pilates can be really helpful with improving your posture. Create healthier moving patterns and habbits. Restrictions are there to be heared . We work first within our today’s limitations , so tomorrow we can take a step further than those limits. If we understand how and why things work then we can do the work needed (consistency and progression are key points).

Flexibility is oftenly seen as an advantage, but it is not necessarily one(esp if it is to the extent of hypermobility it can easily lead to injuries). The optimal state for the body is when we can effectivly control your muscles in our range of motion (mobility). Training this we may overtime gain range of motion. As well as being efficient and safer when we perform physical activities we gain a painfree life!

  • Is a pilates soft (feminine oriented) ,only stretching practice?

In short NO.

As the title clearly states(pilates for al) its a practice responsive to everyone . Totally adaptable to different levels/ experiences/ needs. So it is what you want it to be.

If what you need is a restorative session with more mobility or breathing you can definitely have it. On the other hand you can definately have combinations of great strenght endurance & challenge. To be performed with coordiantion, as well as core strenght, control and balance. The complexity is incrisingly revealing itself as you consistently showing up. Don’t expect from a pilates teacher to throw you into challenge just for the shake of it. Be patient enough to acuired the basic elements of the practice and great things will reveal themselves.

4) Creativity and variety/versatility.

The body itself has specific functions to perform ( we are not here to tell that we discovered something totally new) .. but variety can be achieved through a variety of elements, combinations of movements/ tempo…etc . There is great depth in the complexity of the elements that we can add on/ introduce/ incorporate into our practice. This doesn’t mean that we do random stuff, just to create an impressive choreography.. we work methodically and targeted to the needs and skills of each body.

5) Injuries and rehabilitation-pain & movement

Movement is the answer to a healthier and prosperus life. Or at least this is one of our core values here in Therapiehuis Zanvoort & loving pilates.

Of cource there are circumstances taht may keep as out of action. Our movement may be restricted or even forbiden. But overall movement is the only thing that can bring us back to life.

Pilates is proved to help with rehabilitation, post-surgical recovery, and chronic back or joint pain. Thanks to the focus on spinal mobility and core strengh, to the detailed and often personal approach.

*Disclamer: If a  severe physical situation occurs. First follow the advice & guidlines of your doctor. During your reahabilitation period  trust a specialised physicalterapist and maybe one with an additional pilates training.  We the green light is on group clsses are again open to you.

All the above mentioned elements, in our opinion, garantee the endless interest in the pilates method. A method  so timeless and priceless that can never get old but it sure is gold.
